6th Armored Division Tanks
68th Tank Battalion

6th Armored Division Composite Avranches, France, August 1944  (National Archives)
This composite hulled M4 is from the 68th Tank Battalion.  The side markings on the hull and turret have been blacked out.   There does not seem to be a large number painted on the engine access doors.

M4, Luxembourg, February 1945  (National Archives)

These two 68th Tank Battalion M4’s marked in a similar fashion to the composite shown above.  Tank 13 has its number ahead of the triangle as opposed to behind it, as number 36 seems to have.

M4  (National Archives)

A 68th Tank Battalion M4.  This tank appears to have the small cast antenna base and narrow driver’s hoods. The use of turret racks for stowing packs seems to be common to all of these tanks.  The hull side number and the bumper number correspond in this picture and they appear to correspond in the M4 composite picture; it may be a safe assumption that they corresponded throughout the division.  Since there were not 77 vehicles in a company, I would hazard a guess that the numbers were consecutive through the battalion.  Note the M2 tripod for the .30 caliber machine gun, presumably for mounting the hull gun for night defense.
