The 743rd did not place much faith in US Armor plate, nearly always supplementing
it with sandbags.

743rd Tank as seen in spring or summer 1945, based on photos in "The
View from the Turret". The original photo shows that the sandbag
armor has been removed as well as the travel lock. A bracket for
supporting the sandbags was still attached, as well as the 743rd's characteristic
cable welded to the sponson, presumably to allow the 30th Division infantry
to board more easily or possibly to tie the sandbags on used by the unit
as additional armor, as seen above, even on the heavily armored M4A3E2.
